INFORMATION LITERACY MODELS
Hello Bloggers,
We are back again this week and we are talking about Information Literacy Models sometimes referred to as the big 6. These models serve as a guide for developing information skills in individuals. These big 6 are also called information problem-solving models in information literacy and they include models such as the big 6 information skills model, seven pillars of information literacy model, pathways to knowledge model, PLUS model and seven faces of information model.
For this week we shall concentrate on the big 6 information skills model. This is an information problem solving model developed by Mike Elsenberg and Bob Berkowitz in 1990. This model explains ways in which people of all walks of life solve an information problem. It integrates technology tools in a systematic process to find, use, apply and evaluate information for specific needs and tasks. This model demonstrates the way in which individuals learn to recognise their specific information needs and to progress through the various stages to effectively and efficiently solve their information problems using technology skills.
The big 6 model explains that these skills can be used or applied in all kinds of situations be it at school, work or indeed at a personal level and can be applied across the full range of subject areas. It is believed that this model is one of the most widely known and used models to teach information and technological skills in the world.
The model requires students or information seekers to apply different skills and strategies when applying these information technology skills. Information seekers must first determine their priorities in seeking information, then locate information sources in variety of formats, evaluate and chose the best possible options available and finally use the information obtained.
For this week we shall end here, hope to see you again next week.
